Food Storage

Michael and I have recently started working on our food storage. It's really being pushed strongly in the church right now (as most of you probably know!) and watching my mom build hers has made us think about starting our own. We are off to such a good start after only a few trips! Our first trip was to macey's case lot sale. We loaded up on brown sugar, spaghetti sauce & white sugar. Today we hit albertsons and loaded up on pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, canned corn, canned beans, evaporated milk, cake mixes & cream of mushroom/chicken soup. We also hit Walgreen's to pick up some meds and we checked out their 75% off racks and SCORED!! We got shampoo and conditioner, face wash, tooth brushes, tooth paste, Vick's medicine, deodorant, aspirin, etc... In those three trips our combined savings was almost $400.00! And it was all items that we use every day! I know it's said the best way to build a food storage is one case of something here and there, but we had some serious catching up to do! I think we've got a good start and now a case here and there will keep us on top of things. I am so excited!! I cant even tell you how often I'll be in the middle of cooking something and will be out of something so basic and will have to make a trip to the store. It's also super comforting to know we have food there if anything were to happen and we'd have to rely on it for awhile.
Does anyone have some good tricks or tips to building your food storage? I'd love to know items that you get that i'm probably forgetting! Also how you store your things... any ideas? Any comments would be helpful!! Thanks ladies!

The ward has their cannery date this Thursday I believe. You should definitely try and go sometime b/c it's fun and interesting to see how they work everything...though this Thursday it's from 9-1 I think so you'll probably be at work. We have pinto beans, spagetti and sauce, potatoes, wheat, oil, salt, flour, sugar, water(though we need a lot more water). we're still missing a lot but hopefuly over the next few years we'll be able to build up to having a one year supply

You should check out the book Preparedness Principles by Barbara Salsbury. It has some really great ideas.

I wish! I want to go to the cannery so bad with the ladies from the ward (like you!!) but they almost always do it during the day when i'm at work. I wish they would do some at night like 7ish. Are you going?

You are getting good food to eat! I think people forget that they have to actually EAT the food that they buy. My mom is trying to stock up on her food supply and she bought 24 cans of pineapple. Do you really want to eat pineapple??? You are getting thing that will be yummy to eat. Great job!

I have a list that someone posted online, it's supposed to be $5 a week for food storage, but with inflation some things cost more every week, and then in a year you will have a years worth of food. It's a lot of great basics. I'd be willing to email it to anyone that wants it.
(just so you know who I am, this is Kim your Visiting teacher)
